Evernote Picture Text Recognition

One of the elements that make Evernote popular is the Evernote Picture Text Recognition feature. It is the capacity to search for text within images. Here’s how it operates. Scroll down to learn more!

How Images Are Processed

The Evernote picture text recognition feature starts with a note.

You can give a note to Evernote via synchronization. Yet, it’s not constantly about texts all the time. Some notes may incorporate pictures or images. This may be in a form of a PNG, JPG, or GIF type.

Moreover, the images entered may have texts inside them. This is where the Evernote picture text recognition comes in helpful.

Evernote can find and identify text inside that image. As a result, all texts inside an image, attached to the note, are searchable. Also, handwritten texts are identifiable.

To clarify more, there are different types of images sent to a different set of servers. As a result, it processes images for text recognition.

Also, these servers single job is to perform an Optical Character Recognition (OCR) test. Then, it reports back on whatever it obtains on the image.

Furthermore, it adds these results to the note in a recoIndex form.

What Is A RecoIndex?

It is sort of a hidden metadata attribute. This indicates that you can’t see it when viewing a note.

But, the full recoIndex link can be notified when it transports a note as an ENEX file.

What Are The Recognizable Text?

Well, basically anything that the OCR system considers to be text.

  • Handwritten notes
  • Typewritten text

They are both evaluated by the OCR service, provided the service can detect them.

But there are exceptions. Read more below!

Text Calibrations

It can assess text detected in an image if it meets one of the following orientations within a few degrees:

  • 0° – normal horizontal orientation
  • 90° – vertical orientation
  • 270° – vertical orientation

What Happens If They Don’t Meet The Criteria?

Unfortunately, it will disregard the texts. For example, diagonal or inverted texts. Also, when images are in an index state, they may vary up different results.

Handwritten Words

The best way to ensure that the system finds a handwritten word is to follow these guidelines:

  • Ensure that the handwriting is clear
  • Also, make sure that handwritten texts are in JPG type
  • Don’t add an image containing texts in a PDF file

Evernote’s Recognition Language

Evernote can index 28 typewritten languages. Also, 11 handwritten languages.

Moreover, you can choose which language to use when indexing. How?

You can change using your account settings. Then, head over to the Recognition Language setting.

Examples

Here are some examples of images you can add to your note. Also, you’ll know the benefits of using this feature.
